When Should Someone See A Periodontist?

What To Expect In The First Visit?

A periodontist’s first visit with a patient is an important step in assessing and treating gum disease. During this visit, the periodontist will review the patient’s complete medical and dental history, as it is crucial to understand any underlying conditions that may affect the patient’s oral health. They will then examine the patient’s gums for signs of recession, assess the bite formation and all the teeth, and take x-rays or other diagnostic images to get a better understanding of the patient’s bone and tooth structure. The periodontist will measure the depth of the pockets between the gums and teeth, which can indicate the presence of gum disease

Treatment Options and Education for Gum Disease

Patients will be thoroughly educated on the treatment options available, so they fully understand and are comfortable with the plan. The periodontist may recommend scaling and root planing, antibiotics, or even surgery in more advanced cases. The patient will also be given instructions on how to maintain good oral hygiene at home and prevent further progression of the gum disease. Follow-up appointments are also scheduled to monitor the patient’s progress and adjust the treatment plan as necessary.
