What is a Dental Inlay?

A dental inlay is a custom made restoration used to repair a damaged or decayed tooth. It is made in a dental lab and bonded inside the cusps of the tooth, making it a longer lasting and more precise alternative to a traditional filling. Inlays are available in porcelain, gold, or composite resin, with porcelain being the most popular choice for its natural appearance and durability.

What is a Dental Onlay?

A dental onlay is a more substantial reconstruction. While the process is similar to that of the inlay, the onlay extends out over one or more of the cusps of the tooth. Traditionally, gold had been the preferred material for onlays and inlays alike. However, in recent years, porcelain has become increasingly popular due to its strength and color which can better match the natural color of your teeth.
