Many people first notice gum recession while flossing, or when they run their tongue along the gum line and feel the root of a tooth starting to show. When gums recede, the tooth loses its natural protection against bacteria and wear. If the recession is minor, healthy gum often remains and can keep protecting the tooth with good hygiene and regular checkups. But when recession becomes more advanced, a gum graft can restore the lost tissue.
60+ years combined experience
When gum recession reaches the softer tissue lining the inside of the mouth, the gum needs to be rebuilt, and gum grafting is an effective solution. Left untreated, advanced recession often causes root sensitivity to hot and cold, affects the appearance of your smile, and can lead to root decay and further recession. If your recession is near or has reached that softer tissue, it’s best to act sooner rather than later.
Gum grafting is a routine procedure done under local anesthesia. Most patients return to normal activities the next day, with some tenderness at the graft site for a few days. We’ll give you simple aftercare instructions, including soft foods and gentle cleaning, to help the area heal.
